Rise South City is a community-based environmental justice organization dedicated to building resilient, regenerative, and equitable neighborhoods in South San Francisco and beyond. We work at the intersection of climate justice, racial equity, and community empowerment.

Rise South City is hiring a part-time Urban Forester to lead community-based greening and creek restoration work in South San Francisco , where urban tree canopy coverage is the lowest in San Mateo County.

This role will support Rise South City’s mission to advance environmental justice, climate resilience, and equitable access to green spaces , particularly in underserved communities most impacted by climate change.

Responsibilities

🌳 Urban Forestry & Tree Care

• Perform young tree care (mulching, watering, pruning, weeding, staking, replanting)
• Track tree health, inventory, survival rates, and maintenance records
• Coordinate and respond to community tree care requests
• Plan and lead volunteer tree planting events

🌊 Creek Restoration & Community Engagement

• Support cleanups, native planting, and curriculum development for Colma Creek
• Collaborate with the Colma Creek Collective on restoration events
• Collect environmental baseline data and assist with GIS mapping
• Help organize and facilitate community outreach and educational events

🗂 Program & Administrative Support

• Report program outcomes to partners, funders, and stakeholders
• Support grant reporting and assist with event logistics
• Collaborate with city officials and Rise South City team members
• Contribute to social media outreach and public presentations

Qualifications

Required:

• Passion for trees, equity, and community-based environmental work
• Experience in arboriculture, horticulture, or urban forestry
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Comfortable working outdoors and in a hybrid work environment
• CA driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to lift 50 lbs

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in related field
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Experience with ArcGIS or similar mapping tools
• Experience in arboriculture, horticulture, or urban forestry

• $42.08/hour
• 20–30 hours/week (part-time)
• Hybrid schedule: Minimum 2 days/week in office or field
• Fiscal sponsorship provided by Coastal Quest
